Anchored into Summer

As many of you know I graduated college this year, and recently started a new job. I love it but it keeps me super busy, even on the weekends. I am definitely looking forward to spending time down the Cape with my family and up in Maine with Mike.

That is what I love about New England, we really have everything right here within driving distance. We can drive to the beach, the mountains, lakes, and the woods. I grew up going down the Cape and am definitely a beach person! When I was seven my family went on a seriously disastrous camping trip to Maine, which pretty much turned me off of Maine until I started dating Mike. The past four years I have loved going up to Maine with him, its nice to get away just the two of us. There is no wifi, and only 4 TV channels, so its very easy to unplug and relax for a weekend.

I am looking forward to traveling a lot this summer and now that the weather is finally starting to feel like summer there are plenty of beach days in my future! This dress is from vineyard vines, I think I got it in 2014 maybe? I love the nautical anchor details and the rope belt! It is the perfect summer dress, the collar keeps it professional enough to wear to the office but it’s still fun enough for a night out! I am always looking for nautical pieces to add to my wardrobe and I go back to them every summer. I talk about quality over quantity a lot. This dress is four years old and is still in great condition! Yes it cost $100+ initially but I am still wearing it four years later! You can spend $15 on a dress at Primark but it will be ruined after one or two wears and you will be going right back to the store to spend another $15 dollars and another and another. There are so many quality brands out there, building a wardrobe doesn’t happen over night and investing in quality pieces is the best way to build a long term wardrobe.

Tips for visiting Wicked Tulips

If you have been on social media at all in the past couple weeks I am sure you have seen people posting about Wicked Tulips! It is a gorgeous tulip farm in Johnston Rhode Island. It is gorgeous and well worth the drive!! It is the Colby Farm of spring! The season ended this week which means if you didn’t make it it’s time to start planning for next year! Here are a few tips to make your trip as enjoyable as possible!

1. You need a ticket

In order to get in you need a ticket, your ticket comes with 10 tulips along with your entrance. They do sell out, even on weekdays, so be sure to get your ticket ahead of time. Join the Wicked Tulips email list so you can get alerts on ticket sales. They did a pre-sale this year before the fields opened.

2. Go early

This is a two for one tip. Go early in the season and go early in the day! I unfortunately had a final the day we went so we couldn’t get down there until mid afternoon. But I would try to get there right when they open, there are tons of people. Some are taking photos, some have kinds and strollers with them, and tons are just enjoying the tulips! The earlier in the day you get there the less people. Try and go in the first week! The field only lasts for about 3 weeks and is very dependent on weather so get in that email list and get tickets for one of the first two weekends!

3. Start in the show garden

Wicked Tulips planned really well, they had a show garden and a picking garden. Start in the show garden all the flowers are labeled so you can know exactly what type of tulip it is. Take a look at all the different varieties and then head over to the picking field knowing exactly what you want!

4. Respect

Everyone is there to have fun, be patient. That being said if you are there to take photos don’t be too extra. Respect the people around you who are just there to enjoy the beautiful fields of tulips. Respect that Wicked Tulips is a family owned farm. They sell their tulips so if you pick one you’re buying it do not pick and then discard, I saw so my tulips just left on the ground after being picked! And should be common sense but do not walk through the tulip beds, stay on the paths.

5. Bring water

I had a fairly long drive home and my tulips got a little droopy and wilted on the ride. Bring some water so you can immediately put your tulips in them. If you forget a cup wet some paper towels or napkins and wrap them around the stems!

I had so much fun at Wicked Tulips! I can’t wait to go back next year. I went with my mom and aunt Mary and we had a blast! So sad the season is over but that means summer is right around the corner! Whats your favorite spring/summer place to visit? Any tips?

Gatsbying at Gilded

This weekend Mike and I were in Newport for our friends wedding and we stayed at the adorable boutique hotel Gilded. Gilded is a fun unique hotel themed after the Gilded Age, a perfect fit for Newport! Side note: if it’s you’re first time in Newport you have to visit the Newport Mansions, the ultimate embodiment of the Gilded Age! I loved the design and all the decor of Gilded, I felt like I was staying at Gatsby’s House! We stayed in one of the deluxe king rooms, the bed was so comfy and I was obsessed with the bathroom! Be sure to check out the full room tour on my instagram highlights! If you are looking for a weekend getaway this summer I highly recommend Newport, there is so much to do, and tons or great bars and restaurants! Gilded is located just a short walk from down town so it’s the perfect place to stay! When you check in they provide you with an iPad that is filled with recommendations on where to eat and play!

Gilded is owned by Lark Hotels which I am a big fan of! They have hotels all over New England and each one is unique to its location, and I am all about embracing New England heritage! Gilded embraced Newport’s history and was a luxurious, fun place the stay!

The manager Heather was fabulous! She was able to arrange an early check-in for us so that we had plenty of time to get ready for the wedding. There is an adorable lounge in the main building and a billiards room in the second building. The breakfast Heather prepared was delicious! Definitely make sure you get up in time! There were also fresh cookies put out in the evening, which were a delicious treat when we got back from the wedding. The butterfly wall in the lobby was definitely my favorite part of Gilded, so beautiful!

I definitely encourage everyone to check out the Gilded. It is such a unique hotel and it is perfectly Newport! Thank you to Lark for our complimentary stay, as always all opinions are my own.

Daffy’s in Newport

Last week has finally started to feel like spring! The sun was shining and it was the perfect time for a girls trip to Newport.

Newport has always been one of my favorite places to visit! There are so many fun bars and shops to check out. The history of the town is incredible, if it is your first time going I highly recommend doing the Newport Mansion tours. Buy the 5 mansion ticket, if you don’t make it to five you can save the ticket and use it again next time. If you’re only going to see one, see The Breakers, it is incredible! I love the history of Newport, it gives you a sense of nostalgia for a place and time you’ve never been.

Last weekend I went down to Newport with my friend Jen. It was Daffodil weekend in Newport, Nantucket’s Daffy festival is this coming weekend. Newport is a quick one hour ride from Boston, maybe a little more if you hit traffic. We did a bunch of fun things but my favorite was seeing all the daffodils!

We hit the Cliff Walk which was lined with tons of daffodils. I remember growing up my elementary school would host a daffodil fundraiser every spring. I loved getting the daffodils in the class room, and bringing them home and putting them in water. Going to the Daffy weekends throughout New England makes me feel like a kid again. Not to sound old but it just reminds me of a simpler time, life is so crazy now a days, between school, work, relationships, technology. I feel like there is always something to be done. When I was little you got home from school hopped on your bike and road around the neighborhood until supper time. Anyone else ever feel that way?

Before we headed home we ended the day with Del’s Frozen Lemonade, you can’t leave Rhode Island without one! If you’re heading to Newport soon be sure to check out my weekend guide to Newport!

Ready for Nantucket

I feel like a broken record, but is it summer yet? I can’t wait for weekends on Nantucket this summer, I’m all ready with this fabulous clutch from Perch, and my bright pants. I love spending summers by the ocean. I grew up going to the Cape with my family and the past couple summers have fallen in love with Nantucket! Hoping to get a few weeks down there this summer!

My pants are super old from vineyard vines, and I got my blazer from vineyard vines last fall! I love how classic and New England this outfit is. Everyone needs a navy blazer in their closet, end of story!

As I get ready to graduate I am not sure how much time I’ll have by the ocean this summer, all part of growing up and getting a job! Terrifying I know, but only a few more weeks of school and then its time for the real world. Hope my fellow seniors are enjoying the last few weeks of college and making plans for the future! As scary as it can be I am very excited for this next chapter, stay tuned for a blog post all about my post graduation plans! In the mean time I’ll keep dreaming of Nantucket.

What’s your favorite place to go in the summer?
