Like many of you, I spend most of winter daydreaming about being on a tropical island. But a warm weather getaway isn’t always in the cards, if you need to stay a little closer to home, you’re in luck! You may think of Newport as a summer hot spot but there is plenty to do year-round!
I recently popped down to Newport for a weekend getaway and to experience Newport Wellness Week (January 18th-25th)! From amazing restaurants, spas, and fitness studios, Newport makes a great wellness retreat. Check out all my recommendations on where to work out, best spas, where to eat and where to stay in Newport Rhode Island. Wellness Week goes through January 25th, so if you’re looking for something to do think weekend head on down!
Fitness Studios in Newport:
Sticking to a fitness routine when you’re away can be tough! I always like to look into local studios that have First Time Client offers. Newport is filled with tons of great studios, while I was in Newport this past weekend, I took a class with the local Studio Barre! Barre class is a great low impact work out and it is always one of my favorites. Next time you’re in Newport check out some of these great deals.
Studio Barre– New Client Special 2 weeks unlimited for $65, a Single Drop in is $25
Wave Cycle – Wellness Week Special 3 Rides for $35, a Single Drop in is $20
Mend Yoga– Intro Drop in $5, standard drop in $16
Wellness Treatments in Newport:
Island Wellness Center – Want to come back from your weekend away completely refreshed? Stop into Island Wellness Center and check out their Himalayan Salt room to experience Halotherapy. Island Wellness also offers LED Light Therapy, and Cryotherapy.
Acupuncture Newport — If you know me you know I don’t do needles, but if you’re braver than I, acupuncture has been proven to have tons of benefits. Schedule and Anti-Stress Treatment to start your getaway off right!
The Preserve – Want to burn calories without working out? The Preserve offers Infrared Sauna sessions starting at $29, you can book directly on their website or on the MINDBODY app!
Spas in Newport:
I have a whole blog post coming on my experience with massage, a beginner guide etc. But if you are planning a trip to Newport regardless of it being a wellness weekend, couples’ getaway, or a family trip, you have to check out one of the amazing Spas Newport has to offer.
The Spa at the Newport Marriott- conveniently located downtown at the Marriott The Spa offers a variety of massage, facial treatments, and salon services. Mike and I got a couple’s massage during our recent stay and it was amazing, so relaxing.
Spa Fjor at Hotel Viking – also located in downtown Newport, they offer everything from Thai massage to a Milk & Honey Body Wrap.
The Bodhi Spa– If you’re looking for something a little different definitely check out the Water Journey, a hydrotherapy experience that takes you from a Dead Sea Salt pool, a Eucalyptus Steam Room, to a tradition dry Sauna. This unique experience is perfect for the seasoned spa veterans out there.
Where to Stay in Newport:
Newport Marriott – Located right on the harbor and a short walk from downtown the Marriott is a great choice. We stayed at the Marriott on our recent trip and it was fantastic, the views of the harbor cannot be beat and it still walking distance to all the restaurants and shops. Perfect for a couples’ getaway or a family trip the Marriott has a fitness studio and spa located on site, a pool, and 2 restaurants along with Plank Bar and a Starbucks in the lobby. Skiff Bar is perfect for evening cocktails and a causal dinner for two. If you are looking to have a family dinner head to MainSail, the open nautical dining room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. $$
Some of my other favorite spots to stay include the Gilded ($$), Castle Hill Inn ($$$), The Vanderbilt ($$), and The Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina ($$).
Where to Eat and Drink in Newport:
The Mooring – If you’re looking to have a nice dinner make a reservation at The Mooring, request a table on the patio, if you time it right you can sip cocktails and enjoy amazing seafood while you watch the sunset over the harbor. $$$
Midtown Oyster Bar – Whether you’re looking to grab a nice lunch or are looking for a fun bar to grab drinks at the Midtown Oyster Bar fits the bill. They have a fantastic raw bar and a rooftop bar! $$
Bar ‘Cino – This cozy spot is a must visit. Still pretty new to Newport, we stopped in for dinner on our recent trip, and it really impressed me. Italian but with a modern twist, no basic chicken parmesan here. $$
Skiff Bar – As I mentioned Skiff Bar is located right at the Newport Marriott. They have a fantastic cocktail menu and elevated bar bites. We had the pulled pork nachos and they were to die for! Other must tries include Chef Tyler’s famous mac and cheese, and the mango jalapeño margarita! $
Slim Possible – Stop in for shakes, teas, and snacks to keep things healthy on your trip to Newport! $
What to Do in Newport:
The Newport Mansions – If you’re visiting Newport you have to see the mansions! Throughout the Gilded Age America’s wealthiest families built their summer “cottages” in Newport. You can get tickets from the Preservation Society website, I recommend buying the 5 House Ticket, the tickets never expire so if you don’t visit 5 your first visit you can always go back! Or you can purchase tickets on site at any house. I recommend Rosecliff, Marble House, The Elms, Chateau-sur-Mer, and of course The Breakers! The Breakers is a must see but I would save it for last!
The Cliff Walk – If you get a warm day and you’re looking to get some fresh air during your trip to Newport you have to do The Cliff Walk. Start at The Chanler by Belmont beach and head along the coast, you will pass by a number of the Newport Mansions, including The Breakers! Keep an eye out The 40 Steps, which head all the way down to the ocean. It is a really beautiful walk, bring good walking shoes because it is a bit uneven on certain parts!
Newport Vineyard – My favorite New England wine comes from this vineyard. A short drive from downtown the Newport Vineyard is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon. Do a wine tasting, you have to try The Great White, and then hang out and have a glass of your favorite wine. If you get hungry head into Brix their delicious farm to table dinning!
Shop Downtown – There are tons of cute shops on Bowens Wharf and along Thames St. There are also some amazing art galleries and antique shops. Be sure to check out a few of my favorite wellness shops: Natural Elements, The Apothecary Newport, and Farmaesthetics.
