Xtend Barre Newbury

One of my goals this year is to spend more time taking care of myself. 2018 was a bit crazy between graduation, working on a congressional race, blogging, and working several side jobs. I definitely did not prioritize my health. By the end of campaign season I kept getting really sick, my body was literally rejecting the way I had been treating it. I was eating like crap, not working out, getting just a couple hours of sleep every night, drinking way too much, and the stress was crippling.

The last few months I have been focused on getting healthy, body and mind. I did barre classes my junior year of college and they were always a great workout. I have been going to Xtend Barre for about a month now and I absolutely love it! I go to the Newbury St location, the instructors and staff are all so friendly, upbeat, and positive. Which is exactly what I need and want in a fitness studio! I love walking into a bright positive environment every time I work out.

I am so excited to be Xtend Barre Newbury’s new ambassador! Everyone should have a workout that they love, it makes it so much easier to pull yourself out of bed on Sunday morning and go workout when you love where you go. There are a lot of options for barre in Boston but I love Xtend, each class is different so you don’t feel like you’re doing the same thing every time. And I have definitely noticed a difference in my body after a month, I’m more toned and my clothes are fitting a little better!

The studio is bright, beautiful, and clean. It’s conveniently on the green line, right by June’s convention stop. The studio has plenty of lockers, changing rooms, and water available. If you’re new to Xtend you can get one week unlimited for just $35! I’m there 2-3 times a week and I hope to see everyone at the barre!

It has been so hot out lately and nothing makes me feel better in the heat than a smoothie, I got the Tropical Splash smoothie when I was at Thrive last weekend. Its made with Mango, Banana, Pineapple, and Almond Milk. They have a variety of juices and smoothies for whatever you are in the mood for. 17719F40-1F5E-4F2F-B01D-C7054CC124A43A138DEA-6400-4F13-B951-D0D39B436F81FE19E5DF-7273-45B3-8B1F-B34570211CD6D745D530-177C-4A1F-A768-F450A48163E814980829-F613-41C4-9D42-334DE067610AD69718D1-B9A1-4025-A1C8-5B7D596852D9

To eat I got the Spicy Avocado Toast, and a Mediterranean Salad and my friend got the Loaded PB &J toast. Both were amazing! I will¬† definitely be back for more spicy avocado toast. Thrive is the perfect spot to grab breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack while you’re out and about. If you are trying to eat better but don’t want to start dropping hundreds at whole foods I definitely reccommend making a stop at Thrive Cafe.

Better Living – Meditation

fullsizeoutput_121

I have friends whose whole lives revolve around wellness, fitness, nutrition etc. and for a while my whole life did too. When I was competing in pageants I worked with a trainer Katie Boyd. I learned how to eat right, how to work every little muscle in my body but the most important thing I learned from Katie was how to meditate.

I am not a wellness blogger! I rarely post about wellness and fitness because it’s not something I’m an expert on. But as I’ve taken inventory of my life recently I have realized how important meditation is. I mentioned in a few other posts that I have been having a lot of anxiety recently. When I sat down and tried to determine what was the cause I realized my anxiety got really bad when I stopped meditating. I didn’t really make a conscious choice to stop, life got busy, I had to write a paper, picked up extra hours at work, decided to go out instead etc etc.

There is a Buddhist proverb that says “if you don’t have time to mediate for 1 hour everyday then you should meditate for 2”. I love this because it is so true. My laptop broke last week and I was without one for 3 days. I literally cried, I was so tapped into my technology that being unplugged for 3 days was a nightmare. This is so unhealthy! We all get too plugged in sometimes, and I’ve talked about intentionally unplugging from time to time. But being forced to unplug, not on my terms, was unsettling and forced me to confront my technology addiction.

My solution? I am going to start meditating again. Meditation is a learned skill that requires consistent practice, it is not like riding a bike you can’t jump in and out of it. But I promise you anyone can learn to meditate! I will be starting with 15 minutes a day and working my way back up to an hour everyday. I like to meditate first thing in the morning, instinctively the first thing I do when I wake up is reach for my phone to see what I missed but I am really trying to change this habit. I was very fortunate to have someone teach me how to meditate. But there are plenty of online resources to help you. I have put some of my favorite resources and guided meditation below, please check them out and hopefully they help you as much as they have helped me.

The Chopra Center: Articles, guided meditations, classes etc

Louise Hay: Guided meditations and daily affirmations

The Book of Awakening: Link to buy it on amazon! This book was really helpful when I was learning to meditate

Katie Boyd ‘Miss Fit Club’: My trainer! I went to her to get in physical shape but she really changed my life by focusing on spirituality, mental health, and physical health! Check out her website and show her some love on Instagram!

Have you ever tried meditation? Do you find it helpful? What wellness goals are you setting? Let me know in the comments below!

Pure Barre Review

For the past month I have been going to Pure Barre on Newbury Street. They have a really great first time member deal, 1 month unlimited for $100. It’s a really great deal if you go several times a week!

I had taken a few barre classes in the past but had never really gotten into it so I was curious to try Pure. Here are my thoughts after attending for a month, bottom line I definitely recommend trying it!

The studio: the studio is on the second floor of the building right next to Starbucks. It is clean and bright and the staff is so friendly. There is water for sale if you forget yours, large and clean bathrooms, and changing rooms. I definitely felt comfortable showing up for my first class. It may sound silly but I definitely get gym anxious! I have been to a lot of different gyms and work out studios over the years and it can be a bit nerve wracking to show up by yourself not really knowing what to expect. The staff at Pure Barre made me feel comfortable right away, they gave me a quick tour of the studio, went through some terminology, and the instructor took the time to introduce herself to all the first timers. This made me feel completely welcome and comfortable. If you get anxious about new work outs too it can be helpful to bring a friend along.

The work out is great! It may look easy, the movements are small, weights are light, but be ready to hurt the next day! Hydrate before class and take advantage of the stretching you do during the class. After attending for 1 month I have definitely noticed a difference in my body, my arms look thinner, butt looks firmer, and I overall feel stronger. I have really crappy knees from years of soccer so this work out was perfect for me because it didn’t put to much pressure on my joints (I know I’m 22 but I’m really just an old lady inside).

If you are looking for a new work out to help you feel good inside and out I definitely recommend taking advantage of the first time member offer at Pure Barre the Newbury Street location is conveniently located right next to the Haynes Convention stop on the B, C, and D line!

If you liked this review let me know! In the past I haven’t blogged much about my fitness and nutrition routines but would love to start sharing a little here and there!IMG_2939IMG_2938
